May 24 – Open Mic
Overview.
An opportunity for several short presentations from Seattle area developers.
How to Get Involved.
The last time we did this it was pretty cool and we saw some neat stuff, so I’d encourage anyone who has something they want to share, ask, or bitch about, to sign up by leaving a comment on the blog below. Very informal, doesn’t have to be fancy. Here is a good way to think about it: If you’re really interested in it, other folks in the group likely are as well.
So post a comment below and get involved.

FileMaker Script Triggers Workshop
Mark your calendars for May 18th, 2010! Geoff Coffey will be our guest speaker this month, and once again he will be sharing one of his FileMaker Developer Conference sessions. Geoff will be presenting two sessions at DevCon in August 2010: “Practical Script Triggers” and “Script Triggers Workshop”.
Here in Phoenix, we’ll have the good fortune to participate in Geoff’s workshop session months before DevCon!
In this workshop, we’ll explore some practical script trigger techniques we can use right away. We’ll also learn how to apply the concept of “let FileMaker be FileMaker” to both new and existing systems. Bring your questions and an open mind. Be sure to bring your laptop, too, so you can really take advantage of this workshop-style meeting!
What We’ll Learn
In addition to getting our most pressing script trigger questions answered, we’ll also be learning how to:
- Get usable drop-in trigger-powered techniques.
- Do less and get more… by letting FileMaker do what it does best.
- Take the power and simplicity of our FileMaker systems to the next level.
About Geoff
Geoff Coffey is co-owner of Six Fried Rice, where he writes about, teaches, and builds software with FileMaker Pro. He is also co-author of the acclaimed FileMaker Pro 10: The Missing Manual, the best selling book about FileMaker Pro from O’Reilly Media. Geoff specializes in web application development, and built his first database-connected dynamic web site in 1994 using FileMaker Pro and Applescript. Since then, he’s been creating production web systems in just about everything out there from perl CGI to Cold Fusion to JEE, but his current favorite for small-to-mid-size sites is Ruby on Rails.
April 26 – Developer Tools: Inspector 3 and More
Overview. Vincenzo Menanno of FM::Nexus will be speaking.
Developer Tools: Inspector 3 and More
FM::Nexus Inspector is a widely used diagnostic tool for troubleshooting and improving the quality of FileMaker solutions. In this presentation, you will see the next release of Inspector with full support for FileMaker Pro 11. Redesigned from the ground up, this tool is full of features that help the developer stay on top of any FileMaker project, including powerful new Quick Find-based searching. Performance was one of the main goals of this new release, and I will show how it stacks up against the prior version. Come and discover what this new version of Inspector is all about and how it can you help you with your FileMaker development from start to finish—debugging, documenting, security and so much more.
As an added bonus I’ll demo our FOCUS framework that we use as a starter file for many of our projects, also updated for FM 11. You’ll see how quick and easy it is to get a solution up and running with this feature-packed framework. Even if you don’t end up using FOCUS, this presentation will get you thinking about ideas and techniques to use in your future projects.
Last but not least, you’ll hear a brief update on the latest features in the FM::Nexus Web Services Plug-in for integrating FileMaker solutions with other systems and services.

April Kentuckiana Meeting
Greetings, File Makers!
Well, after a change of program AND a change of venue, we finally have the details for this month’s meeting settled.
LOCATION
Next month (May) we will be back at the 1234 S. Third location, but this month we will be meeting in the board room of the main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library, 301 York Street, downtown Louisville. (Parking is on the street, so come a little early and bring quarters or your PARC SmartCards.)
TIME/DATE
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm (or so)
April 15
PROGRAM
Bob Patin–our presenter on FileMaker and the web that was scheduled for this month–had a last-minute client issue and requested that we reschedule him for a future date. We’ll let you know when that is. In his stead, though, we have arranged a power-house lineup of local talent for you:
First up is Byron Songer who will continue his Intro to FileMaker series with a session on the calculation engine and how you can really simplify your work by letting FileMaker calculate a whole host of things for you.
Following that, Brian Ginn will give you his take on what’s cool about script triggers. This caps off Jonathan’s two-part introduction to the subject by taking it up a notch and showing you some really effective ways to automate your solutions.
NETWORKING
Following the main presentations will be a time of discussion and networking where you can ask questions and commune with other FileMaker users as long as you want.
FUTURE
We are still looking forward to Bill Kaiser and Bill Heizer (of FileMaker, Inc.) bringing their FileMaker 11 show to Louisville in May. We’ll keep you posted on that.
